About the Farm
Background
Located on the high prairie of Calhan, Colorado, just 30 miles east of Colorado Springs, this farm has a rich history of producing registered Texas Longhorn cattle, beef, and veal, along with sustainable pork and free-range eggs. The farm is known for its commitment to local economy, optimal nutrition, and ecological restoration. Owned and operated by Katie Belle Miller, the farm also offers Navajo-churro sheep fiber products and maintains a strong connection with the community through its farm store and newsletter.
Practices
The farm employs holistic management practices, ensuring that pastures are never treated with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic chemicals. Livestock graze on native Pikes Peak prairie grasses, which contribute to leaner meat higher in omega-3 fatty acids. Proper pasture management principles are implemented to remove carbon dioxide, decrease methane and greenhouse gases, reduce topsoil erosion, and improve water supplies. The farm avoids continuous grazing and overgrazing, instead mimicking the natural grazing patterns of migrating herbivores. Livestock are raised without routine antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones, or animal by-products, and higher standards of care are maintained to minimize stress and improve animal welfare.
The Rest
The farm's mission is to create an agricultural business model that views the land as an ecological resource base, using livestock to achieve positive ecological outcomes. The farm store offers American Grassfed Association certified grassfed and grass-finished beef, free-range eggs, and Navajo-churro sheep fiber products. Customers can sign up for the farm's newsletter to receive cooking tips, product availability updates, recipes, and stories from the farm.
