About the Farm
Background
Helsing Junction Farm was founded in 1992 by Annie Salafsky and Susan Ujcic as one of the country's first CSA operations. Both graduates of The Evergreen State College, they began with a 75-member CSA and expanded to 1200 members before stabilizing at 550 shareholders. The farm is a group effort involving their families and the families of their workers, with a focus on soil health and produce quality.
Practices
The farm prioritizes soil health by testing it twice a year, correcting imbalances, applying trace minerals, cover cropping extensively, and practicing minimal tillage. These methods ensure that vegetables grown in their nutrient-rich soil look and taste amazing. Almost everything grown on the farm goes directly to their CSA members, fostering a direct connection between the farm and its community.
The Rest
The farm collaborates with local producers to offer CSA members access to organic fruit, honey, yogurt, and sauerkraut through their online store. They also provide weekly recipes and storage tips to help members make the most of their shares. Helsing Junction Farm has a CSA Food Bank Program, matching member donations to deliver produce to families in need. They also partner with The Gleaners Coalition to donate thousands of pounds of produce to local food banks and shelters. The farm offers farm-to-table events, tours, and a farm stand open from mid-June to early November.
