About the Farm
Background
Located in the rugged Pine Ridge region of northwest Nebraska, the ranch is known for having North America’s second largest herd of registered yaks and being the continent’s largest producer of raw yak fiber. The ranch breeds exceptional bulls and heifers as seed stock for other ranchers, contributing significantly to the yak farming community.
Practices
The yaks are naturally grass-fed during the warmer months and fed certified organic grass-alfalfa hay in winter. The ranch strictly avoids the use of steroids, growth hormones, and antibiotics in their animal husbandry. The commitment to humane treatment ensures the well-being of the yaks, resulting in high-quality, contaminant-free meat. The unique geography of the Pine Ridge, with its diverse flora and fauna, provides an ideal environment for grazing.
The Rest
Yak meat, known for being low in fats, cholesterol, triglycerides, and calories, is high in Omega 3 oils and poly-unsaturated fats, offering a lean yet juicy and flavorful alternative to venison or bison. The ranch offers a variety of yak meat products, including ground meat, roasts, steaks, and jerky, available through local co-ops and online platforms. Monthly deliveries are made to Ogallala and Rapid City, with additional delivery options in the Nebraska panhandle. Visitors are welcome to pick up orders directly from the ranch.
