About the Farm
Background
Michael and Laurie Davis started the farm in 1996, choosing the fertile soils and high peaks of the Adirondacks to raise their three young sons. They ran a market garden and small CSA providing all-natural produce to Essex County for many years. Liam Davis, their middle son, and his friend Luke Barns sold produce at the on-farm stand one summer. Eight years later, Liam and his then partner Jenny Linger toured more than fifty small farms and returned to rekindle the farm business in early 2014. Michael and Laurie are currently focused on setting up critical infrastructure before resuming full business operations.
Practices
The farm employs holistic design to maximize efficiency, utilizing methods such as cover cropping, intercropping, and rotational grazing to build resilient soils. Chickens and pigs are used to fertilize the fields and manage forage quality. This integrated approach helps build organic matter in the soils, addressing environmental challenges like drought, disease, and nutrient leaching. The farm's approach, termed 'homegrown,' reflects an intimate scale and deep reverence for the relationships between the garden, animals, landscape, local economy, and community.
The Rest
The farm markets its produce, flowers, soap, lip balm, honey, and fruit through the farm stand. They also offer seed garlic for gardeners, homesteaders, and small farmers. The farm is taking a few years to build infrastructure and currently has limited products available. During this period, their soap and lip balms can be found at Dogwood Bread Company.
