About the Farm
Background
Hares and Harrows Farmstead began in late winter of 2018 with the raising of meat rabbits and soon expanded to growing vegetables and participating in the local farmers market. In 2020, they relocated to a new property better suited for raising pigs, specifically Gloucestershire Old Spot/Berkshire Cross breeds known for their flavorful meat and fat content.
Practices
Pigs are given acres of wooded pasture to roam and are only housed in the barn when they first arrive in early spring. They are fed a custom organic, Non-GMO No-Soy feed to maintain high-quality fat and meat. The pigs forage on fresh pasture and acorns, which help preserve the quality of their fat. The farm emphasizes utilizing the entire pig and maintaining the integrity of the animal's life and sacrifice.
The Rest
The farm offers 'The Homesteader's Harvest' classes, a two-day on-farm workshop in November that teaches participants how to properly harvest, process, and butcher a whole pig. This class is also available as a workshop hosted at other farms. Additionally, the farm provides whole, half, and quarter shares available for registration, with deposits due by June 15 and harvest in late fall.
