About the Farm

Background

Founded by Tom Trantham, the farm has been in the dairying business for 29 years and began processing its own milk in 2002. Trantham transitioned from traditional farming methods to a more natural approach in 1987 after a serendipitous incident where his cows broke free and improved their milk production by grazing on untreated fields. This led to the development of the Twelve Aprils grazing program, which has earned international acclaim and recognition from the USDA.

Practices

The farm employs a rotational grazing system with 29 paddocks, allowing cows to graze the top, most nutritious half of plants. This method enhances milk production and maintains soil health. No chemicals or chemical fertilizers have been used since 1988, relying instead on organic matter to enrich the soil. The cows graze year-round, and the milk is low-temperature pasteurized and non-homogenized, preserving the cream in the milk.

The Rest

The farm operates a small store open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday and until 5:00 PM on Saturdays, offering their dairy products along with other South Carolina-grown items and local seasonal produce. The farm's unique approach and high-quality products attract customers from across the region, contributing to rapid business growth and widespread recognition.
