About the Farm

Background

Half Pint Farm, operated by husband and wife team Mara and Spencer Welton, was sold in 2019 after 20 years in agriculture. For 16 years, they grew produce on their three-acre farm located in Burlington's Intervale, providing food for a farmers' market, a 24-member CSA, and up to 40 restaurants and caterers each week.

Practices

The farm specialized in small, baby, and specialty varieties of crops, often exceeding 400 varieties each year. They emphasized the use of heirloom and open-pollinated seed varieties and were members of Seed Savers Exchange, Slow Food USA, NOFA, and the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Growers Association. The unique micro-climate of the Intervale allowed for early planting and extended growing seasons, while the silt loam soil in the floodplain provided fertile ground despite annual flooding.

The Rest

The farm was known for its excellent quality produce, picked at peak freshness, and presented beautifully. The farm's miniature dachshunds, Mr. Smeems and Bullet, were integral in keeping the farm free of pests and provided comic relief. The farm's small size was intentionally chosen for its manageability and productivity, inspired by historical research on farm sizes.
