About the Farm
Background
Launched in October 2000, the farm in Santa Maria was modeled on a successful sister business in San Luis Obispo. It has been nourishing the community with pesticide-free produce, flowers, and fruit & vegetable plants for over two decades. The farm is a program of the Transitions-Mental Health Association, dedicated to providing employment and a supportive environment for individuals with mental illness.
Practices
The farm employs pesticide-free growing methods, ensuring that all vegetables, flowers, and garden starts are cultivated without harmful chemicals. Employees are involved in every aspect of production, from propagation and seeding to weeding, harvesting, flower-arranging, and selling directly to customers. The work is largely physical and conducted outdoors, fostering a connection with the land and contributing to the recovery and personal growth of the employees.
The Rest
The farm stand is open every Thursday afternoon from 12 Noon to 3 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM. Visitors are welcome anytime to explore the farm. The farm also provides job-skills training, work experience, and opportunities for job advancement. Employees, who are often referred by the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness, work varying shifts and are supported by on-site mental health workers and vocational specialists. The farm collaborates with the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness Co-Op and the California State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.
