About the Farm
Background
In 1992, Max Lloyd, a high-tech entrepreneur, developed a passion for fine wine during a business trip to Sonoma. Inspired by his family's tradition of winemaking, he planted 220 Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Virginia in 1993. Over the years, he expanded his vineyards and gained extensive experience in the wine industry. In 2001, the Grove property near Greensboro was acquired, and the first estate vineyards were planted in 2002. Grove Winery received its license in 2004 and opened to the public later that year. Since then, the winery has garnered over 200 medals in local and international competitions, establishing itself as one of the most awarded wineries on the East Coast. In 2022, a new ownership group took over, investing in facility improvements and vineyard expansion.
Practices
The estate vineyards thrive on sloping, mineral-rich land in the Haw River Valley, benefiting from a unique microclimate. European varietal grapes such as Merlot, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Cabernet Franc, Traminette, and Tempranillo are dry farmed, emphasizing the natural resilience and flavor of the vines. The winery produces about 3100 cases of premium wine annually, with more than 80% of the grapes grown on the estate. The farming philosophy prioritizes the health of the vines and the land, ensuring that each grape variety reaches its full potential.
The Rest
The winery features a tasting room open daily for tastings, shopping, picnics, and special events. Visitors can enjoy a glass of wine on the patio overlooking Lake Cabernet. The gift shop offers estate-grown wines, wine hardware, local grape and fruit jellies, honey, local meat products, and mushrooms. Grove Winery's wines have received numerous accolades, including Double Gold Medals and high ratings at international competitions.
