About the Farm

Background

Green Gulch Farm is part of the Green Gulch Zen Center in Muir Beach and has been organically certified since 1985. The farm is known for its integration of Zen Buddhist practices with agriculture, with farmhands starting their day with meditation. Produce from the farm is sold at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and supplied to Greens Restaurant in San Francisco, as well as used in meals served at the Zen Center.

Practices

The farm employs organic farming methods and emphasizes the importance of composting, using kitchen scraps from both the Zen Center and Greens Restaurant to enrich the soil. The use of biodiesel for tractors reflects a commitment to environmentally conscious farming practices. The daily routine of meditation and mindful work in the fields underscores a holistic approach to farming that integrates spiritual practice with agricultural labor.

The Rest

Green Gulch Farm is part of the San Francisco Zen Center, which was established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. The Zen Center operates three practice places, including Green Gulch Farm, and offers a variety of programs such as daily meditation, monastic retreats, classes, and workshops. The community is diverse, welcoming students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks. The Zen Center also engages in outreach programs to support prisoners, the homeless, and those in recovery.
