About the Farm
Background
For over 20 years, the Green Earth Harvest program has farmed on protected land at McDonald Farm in south Naperville, growing local, organic produce for the community. Since 2002, they have organically grown vegetables on 49 acres with a dedicated team of 9 farm crew members, 4 greenhouses, and 2 tractors. They proudly serve over 700 families through their farmshare program and an additional 600 families through farm to food pantry programs and weekly summer farm stands.
Practices
The farm employs certified organic farming methods, emphasizing the health of the soil, vegetables, people, and communities. Their 'choice' farmshare model allows subscribers to select their preferred vegetables each week, reducing food waste and ensuring satisfaction with the produce. The program encourages community involvement through UPick days, where participants can harvest peas, tomatoes, beans, and ground cherries, and through events like pizza nights.
The Rest
Farmshare subscribers can pick up their vegetables at the farm, one of five pickup sites, or opt for home delivery. The farm also partners with local producers to offer meat, eggs, milk, fruits, organic grains, and flowers. The seasonal structure includes a Spring Season from mid-May to mid-June, a Main Season from mid-June to the end of October, and a Late Fall Season for the first four weeks of November.
