About the Farm

Background

In the early 1980s, Allan and Lois Higgins started raising beef in Colorado using a conventional program. After learning how much healthier finishing animals on grass was for the animals, the consumer, and the environment, they committed to raising 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef. In 2002, they launched the GrassRoots label to supply their meat on a larger scale throughout the country. Today, three generations of family are actively involved in the operation.

Practices

GrassRoots Meats adheres to strict animal husbandry guidelines focusing on the humane treatment of animals in a healthy environment where they mature naturally. The farm utilizes pasture rotation, controlled grazing, and water source management—an environmentally sound approach to raising cattle. Bulls and cows are selected based on their genetic ability to produce offspring that finish well on pasture only, resulting in tender, great-tasting, and nutritious meat. All animals and poultry are raised without added hormones or antibiotics and are processed humanely in USDA processing facilities.

GrassRoots Meats provides all natural 100% grass-fed and grass-finished Colorado beef and lamb, organic free-range chicken from a California partner, all natural pork raised in Iowa, and all natural duck also raised in California. They ship UPS Ground to most states and UPS Second Day to those outside of a 3-day delivery range. The farm is deeply committed to providing the finest quality meat at affordable prices, treating their customers as family, friends, and neighbors.
