About the Farm
Background
Ted and Bill Gilcrease envisioned the orchard as a place where families could experience the joys of picking fresh produce. Originally part of a larger ranch that raised chickens and turkeys and grew alfalfa, the focus shifted to creating a community orchard in the 1970s. Ted managed the farm while Bill experimented with apple strains suited for the arid environment. In 1997, recognizing the need to preserve the orchard, they established the non-profit Gilcrease Orchard Foundation.
Practices
The orchard emphasizes hands-on experiences, allowing visitors to pick their own fruits and vegetables directly from the field. This approach not only provides fresh produce but also educates the community about where their food comes from and the importance of local agriculture. The foundation's efforts ensure that the land remains a productive and educational resource for future generations.
The Rest
The orchard is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7 AM to 10 AM, offering a variety of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, peaches, apples, and cucumbers. The farm stand sells additional items like apple cider, freezer jam, and edible sunflowers. Concessions include burritos, quesadillas, and shaved ice. Pets are not allowed for food safety reasons, but ADA-approved service animals are permitted. The orchard also offers gift cards and seasonal events, such as sunflower fields.
