About the Farm
Background
John Boy Farms is a 6th-generation family farm that has been growing crops since 1879 in the fertile Red River Valley of southern Manitoba. The farm's unique environment has allowed it to select and adapt strong, vigorous garlic seed varieties and cover crop species, making their garlic cold hardy and flavorful. The farm is currently managed by John and his wife Ainsley, with help from John's parents and extended family. John, an agronomist with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture, began growing garlic in 2006 and now specializes in producing cold-hardy garlic varieties.
Practices
John Boy Farms employs sustainable and natural growing methods, including the use of cover crop green manures, seaweed applications, and compost for fertility. The farm practices long crop rotations, pest prevention strategies, and mechanical weeding to avoid synthetic pesticides. Each garlic plant is individually inspected multiple times during the growing season.
The Rest
The farm offers a large selection of cover crops and sells premium garlic seed and cover crop seed to customers across Canada. Their garlic stock is selected for great flavor, good bulb size, strong plant vigor, and tolerance for a wide range of growing conditions.
