About the Farm

Background

Galen Bontrager Farm was established with knowledge and practices gained during an apprenticeship with Joel Salatin at Polyface Inc. in Virginia. Joel Salatin, featured in Michael Pollan's 'The Omnivore's Dilemma,' is renowned for his innovative farming techniques. The farm has since become known for producing Salad Bar Beef, Salad Bar Lamb, pastured pork, pastured broilers, pastured turkeys, and pastured eggs.

Practices

The farm employs intensive rotational grazing systems where beef and sheep are fed pasture and hay. Poultry are raised on pasture, receiving ample sunshine and exercise. Pigs enjoy fresh air, a place to wallow, and exposure to daylight. Although not certified organic, the farm uses non-GMO grain for poultry and avoids drugs, hormones, and chemicals in land and animal management.

The Rest

Chicken and turkey are custom raised and available for pickup on the farm, while orders for beef, pork, and lamb are also taken. Farm tours are available upon request. Patronage supports ecologically sound farming, humane animal husbandry, and the local community.
