About the Farm
Background
The original Frith Farm belonged to Daniel's great-grandfather in southern England, with a rich family history spanning generations. Motivated by idealism, Daniel started the farm in Scarborough, Maine, in 2010, purchasing a 14-acre piece of land protected by an agricultural conservation easement. From initially growing for thirty CSA families on less than an acre, the farm has expanded to serve about 300 families, three natural food stores, and an on-farm store. The farm's growth and evolution have been supported by family, neighbors, and dedicated apprentices.
Practices
Frith Farm's practices prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and community engagement. Certified Organic by MOFGA, the farm exceeds Organic standards through no-till farming, avoiding pesticides, and not using tractors in the fields. The no-till system enhances soil structure, increases soil life, and reduces pollution. The farm also employs a human-scale approach to farming, emphasizing the benefits of manual labor and attention to detail. Additionally, the farm strives to make its food accessible to all through sliding scale pricing, accepting EBT, WIC, and barter, and sharing agricultural knowledge openly.
The Rest
Frith Farm offers seasonal CSA subscriptions, partners with local grocers like Lois' Natural Marketplace, The Portland Food Co-Op, and New Morning Natural Foods, and operates an on-farm store open daily from dawn to dusk. The farm also hosts community events and educational opportunities, fostering a strong connection with the local community.
