About the Farm
Background
For over eight years, the farm was an integral part of the El Dorado County community, operating on the historic Veerkamp Ranch, now known as Wakamatsu Farm and owned by the American River Conservancy. Despite their dedication, the farm had to cease operations after the lease was not renewed, leading the family to continue their work in the pastured dairy world in Del Norte County, CA.
Practices
The farm employed holistic management practices, keeping their Jersey and Shorthorn cows on pasture year-round, supplemented with grass and alfalfa hay, minerals, and a small amount of sprouted barley. They ensured the quality of their raw milk through weekly bacterial testing. Additionally, their hens, broilers, pork, and lamb were all pastured, with hens being fed sprouted barley and milk.
The Rest
Raw milk was available exclusively to herdshare owners, and visitors were encouraged to call ahead to schedule tours. The farm was located near Hwy. 50 in the Coloma/Lotus area, and despite its closure, the farm's blog and pictures remain available online.
