About the Farm
Background
Cleared in 1791, the 190-acre farm has seen various uses from dairy to sheep to forest products. After a decade of dairy farming, the current stewards, Evan and Emily Reiss along with Emily's parents Lee and Dean Wheeler, took a two-year break to reassess and reinvigorate their passion for the land. Today, they manage a market garden, fruit crops, and raise beef, lamb, and layer hens.
Practices
The farm employs organic practices without synthetic herbicides and pesticides, using compost from their own organic dairy. They foster diversity through inter-cropping, cover cropping, crop rotation, and ecological growing systems. Pastures are managed with a small herd of heritage breed cows, layer hens, and a mixed-breed flock of sheep. The forest is managed for firewood, timber, and maple syrup production.
The Rest
The farm serves as an incubation hub for multiple ventures, including an upstart goat dairy and an off-grid Educational Homestead. It also functions as an event space for workshops and celebrations, nourished by the farm's produce and landscape. They host campers through HipCamp and will begin hosting WWOOFers in 2023. The farm established 'Fledge Fest,' a community music and arts celebration, and offers a CSA, local farmer's market produce, and a Spring Plant sale.
