About the Farm

Background

Located in Lowell, IN, the Bruce family farm dates back to the late 1800s. Tom Bruce, who grew up on the farm, eventually began to care for it alongside his wife Rhonda and their three sons, Nash, Luke, and Will. The farm's name, Five Hands Farm, reflects the five family members who contribute to its operations. Tom's legacy of farming passion continues through his sons, with Nash managing the land's care and cultivation.

Practices

The farm adheres to practices that meet or exceed USDA organic standards, despite not being certified due to cost. They employ plant-based compost, cured chicken manure, and OMRI-listed liquid fertilizers, avoiding synthetic fertilizers and chemical herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. Biodiversity is promoted through cover cropping, minimal soil disturbance, composting, annual soil tests, efficient irrigation, protected culture growing, encouraging natural predators, and raising pollinators. Meticulous crop rotation and fallow rotations help prevent disease, insect pressure, and soil erosion. Seeds are sourced from reputable suppliers, ensuring non-GMO, untreated seeds selected for flavor, appearance, and yield.

The Rest

Farm tours are available by reservation. The farm collaborates with local businesses such as Provecho, Green is Good, and Locavore Farm, providing fresh produce and participating in community events. The farm's commitment to transparency means they are open to answering any questions about their growing and handling processes.
