About the Farm
Background
Founded in 2008, Green City Growers initially aimed to help homeowners grow their own produce. By 2009, they expanded to serve both residential and commercial customers, partnering with companies like Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and B.good restaurants. In 2013, they participated in the MassChallenge startup accelerator, winning a social impact award from the John Henry Foundation. They began managing New England’s largest rooftop farm at Whole Foods Market in Lynnfield, MA, and later became the garden education provider for Beverly school system. In 2015, they started managing Fenway Park’s rooftop farm and launched programs with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and Boston Properties. They also implemented a school garden program for Boston Public Schools with funding from the Target Foundation. The company now manages 180 unique farm and garden locations throughout the Northeast.
Practices
Green City Growers emphasizes environmental stewardship through sustainable sourcing, organic garden management, and site design that acknowledges their role in an interconnected ecosystem. They are dedicated to quality, ensuring the highest standards from installation to harvest. Their commitment to transformative potential drives them to continuously reimagine their relationship with the environment, food, health, and urban spaces. As a Certified B Corp, they combine financial stability with social and environmental good.
The Rest
Green City Growers launched an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in 2021, allowing employees to become partial owners. They are members of the Ecological Landscape Alliance, promoting environmentally safe and beneficial landscape practices. The company manages Fenway Farms, a 5,000 square foot rooftop farm at Fenway Park, providing fresh, organically grown produce for Red Sox fans and donating produce from the Vineyard Vines Event Deck to the community.
