About the Farm
Background
Farmshare Austin's FarmerStarter program has been developed to equip future farmers with the practical knowledge and experience necessary to establish and manage a successful market farm. The program is known for its comprehensive approach, combining hands-on training with formal education to cover all aspects of organic vegetable production and farm management.
Practices
The program emphasizes organic and sustainable growing methods, ensuring that students gain in-depth skills in organic vegetable production. The curriculum includes practical training in bed preparation, planting, weeding, irrigation, harvest, and packing. Students also learn about greenhouse management, propagation, CSA distribution and management, and holistic farm planning. The farm operates on a seven-acre organic plot, where students live and work, immersing themselves in the daily operations of a working farm.
The Rest
The FarmerStarter program offers a 20-week residential experience with a tuition fee of $5,100, and scholarships are available. Students receive 200 hours of formal educational time through bi-weekly classes, farm walks, discussions, workshops, and monthly local farm tours. The program seeks vibrant, enthusiastic candidates who are passionate about sustainable agriculture and ready to engage in an inclusive learning community.
