About the Farm

Background

Celebrating over 40 years of diversified horse-powered family farming, the Jay and Janet Bailey family have been farming a 40-acre horse-powered, diversified farm using 1, 2, 3, and 4 horse hitches since 1980. Located in Southern Vermont, they have offered draft horse workshops, rebuilt horse-drawn mowers, hay and sleigh rides, and fresh eggs for over four decades. Jay Bailey also dedicates his creative energy to rebuilding horse-drawn mowing machines for sale and servicing machines in use.

Practices

Animals are pastured and grass-fed to the extent possible, given the climate and their needs. Sheep are 100% grass/hay fed, while goats receive a small amount of supplement at milking time. Broilers, turkeys, and some layers are pastured and receive organic grain. The farm is operated by three generations of farmers who emphasize the use of horse power in their farming practices.

The Rest

The farm store offers eggs, broilers, stewing hens, milk, chevon, lamb, hoggett, mutton, and holiday turkeys. Seasonal handmade items such as raspberries, preserves, and wood crafts are available, along with yarn, sheep skins, and maple syrup. Hayrides by sleigh or wagon are available by reservation almost any time of the year. The farm also teaches draft horse workshops, providing skills for those interested in starting with their own horse or team.
