About the Farm
Background
The property has been in Farmer Brian’s family for over one hundred thirty-five years. Brian grew up on this land, hunting, fishing, and helping his dad run cattle. The land gently slopes to the adjacent Little Benard River with wet-weather draws criss-crossing the property. There are at least two springs on the property that keep the ponds full even in dry weather. The property is covered in large oak trees, some with diameters in excess of five feet. The native soil is a mix of clay and sand, which makes for easy digging. The only rocks, however, were imported.
Practices
The farm voluntarily conforms to organic farming guidelines, utilizing natural, non-chemical fertilizers such as livestock manure and pesticides like diatomaceous earth. Animals do not receive hormones or antibiotics, and no additives or preservatives are added to the finished products. Chickens are fed a Non-Medicated, Non-GMO, Organic feed from a local feed mill, Coyote Creek. The mission for the property is preservation, using natural, sustainable farming techniques to build the soil, grow native vegetation, and clean the water. A multi-species farming model is employed, which is extremely beneficial to the land as each species utilizes the forages differently and contributes to the land.
The Rest
Erbe Ranch offers a Spring and Fall Chicken CSA. They participate in four different farmer's markets during the month and encourage pre-ordering to avoid long lines. Home deliveries are made on Saturdays to Houston and Mondays to the local area. The farm's website provides various resources, including cooking tips for grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, and pasture-raised chicken.
