About the Farm

Background

Located in the picturesque landscape of Chippewa County, Wisconsin, this farm has carved out a niche by focusing on heritage breeds and traditional farming practices. Known for their Shetland-Icelandic cross sheep, old-fashioned pigs, and miniature Hereford cattle, they have become a local staple for high-quality, naturally raised livestock. The farm also offers Saanen-Alpine cross milking goats and heritage turkeys, catering to a diverse range of customers looking for authentic farm products.

Practices

During the warm season, the livestock graze on pasture, which constitutes about a third of the farm. In colder months or during droughts, the animals are fed hay, most of which is produced on the farm itself. When additional hay is needed, it is sourced from local farmers. The farm custom blends pig and poultry grain rations, aiming to grow as much of the grain as possible. Non-GMO grains like oats, wheat, triticale, and corn are planted and harvested, with a crop rotation system ensuring no field grows the same crop more than once every five years. Fields are left fallow or grazed by pigs at least once in that period. The farm avoids pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers, relying instead on animal manure for crop fertilization. Animals are raised as naturally as possible, with hormone-free and non-medicated feed, and treatments are administered only when necessary.

The Rest

The farm offers both feeder pigs and butcher hogs, with locker dates scheduled for spring 2024. Whole lambs will also be available around 2024, though in limited numbers. Customers are encouraged to reserve their orders in advance. The farm's website is continually updated, and they welcome suggestions for new content. They also maintain a listing on LocalHarvest for additional visibility.
