About the Farm

Background

Founded in 2002 by Shyaam M. Shabaka, EcoVillage Farm Learning Center is a project of the Earth Island Institute. Located on approximately six acres of semi-rural farmland in an urban area of Richmond, the center aims to be a model for growing healthy youth and communities. It offers a variety of programs and activities to engage urban residents in environmental and social justice work.

Practices

The farm employs urban organic farming techniques, teaching people how to grow their own food and eat healthily. It features an orchard of fruit trees, two creeks with well-developed riparian corridors, and a variety of native and non-native vegetation. The center emphasizes hands-on learning experiences, such as beekeeping, sheep shearing, and caring for small farm animals. Additionally, it promotes responsible social living skills, conflict management, and violence prevention.

The Rest

EcoVillage Farm collaborates with schools, youth, community organizations, and local governments to create a healthy environment and socially/economically just society. It offers a CSA program, a weekly produce market stand, and internships. The farm is easily accessible by public transportation and serves as an 'Oasis of Connectivity' in Richmond, providing a space where urban residents of all cultural backgrounds can learn and engage with nature.
