About the Farm
Background
The East New York CSA is driven by the Farm Fresh initiative of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) to combat high market prices of fresh produce and the scarcity of stores selling it in urban neighborhoods. The CSA, now in its second season, partners with local farms to offer fresh produce at reduced costs, ensuring that all income levels can access healthy food. The program is member-run and aims to support the local economy by purchasing directly from farmers.
Practices
The East New York CSA collaborates with farms like El Mirador Farm and Hepworth Farms, which are known for their sustainable and pesticide-free farming methods. El Mirador Farm, managed by Victor Pavia and his family, is celebrated for its prolific peppers, potatoes, and watermelons. Hepworth Farms, a seventh-generation family-owned farm, provides the fruit share and is operated with a commitment to sustainable agriculture.
The Rest
The CSA operates on a sliding scale and accepts SNAP benefits to make organic food accessible to everyone. Distribution takes place at Iglesia Misionera Evangelica on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Optional shares for fruit and eggs are available after purchasing a vegetable share. The CSA is actively seeking a new egg share vendor and encourages community suggestions.
