About the Farm
Background
Since 2003, the farm has been a cornerstone of the community, providing CSA shares and fresh produce to hundreds of families. Over the years, they have expanded their operations and learned to grow more efficiently, extending their seasons and improving their own diets while feeding others. Despite scaling back their CSA operations in 2013 due to the owners' advancing age and other full-time jobs, the farm continues to thrive with a focus on livestock and smaller-scale vegetable production.
Practices
The farm employs sustainable agriculture methods, including large-scale composting and rotational pastures since the 1970s. They grow most of their own feed for the animals and grind it on-site. The use of hoop houses and greenhouses helps extend the growing season, although unpredictable weather can pose challenges. Their commitment to organic practices is evident in their offerings at the local market, including organic olive oil and fair trade coffee.
The Rest
The farm remains active at the Sweetwater Local Foods Market, offering beef, organic olive oil, and fair trade coffee. They encourage the community to grow their own vegetables, emphasizing that it is easier than one might think. The farm also shares their knowledge and experiences through a blog, inviting like-minded individuals to learn from their journey.
