About the Farm
Background
Dutch Hollow Farm was established in 1976 by the Chittenden family, who moved from Fair Weather Farm in New Lebanon to the historic town of Stuyvesant, about 15 miles south of Albany. The farm is named after the early Dutch settlers in the area. Over the years, Dutch Hollow Farm has become known for its Registered Jersey cattle, winning numerous awards including the AJCA Master Breeder and National Dairy Shrine Distinguished Cattle Breeder awards. The farm is operated by Paul and Melanie Chittenden, their sons Brian, Alan, and Nathan, and the next generation, Emily, Quade, Maxwell, and Cassie.
Practices
The farm raises its beef naturally, feeding cattle the highest quality grain and forage without the use of growth hormones or steroids. Antibiotics are administered only in the direst of circumstances. Pork is produced seasonally, while beef and eggs are available year-round. The meat is processed by a local federally inspected butcher shop to ensure quality. The Chittendens also milk 750 Registered Jersey cows and farm 2,000 acres, with their milk being sold through Agri-Mark and used by companies like Cabot, Beecher's Handmade Cheese, High Lawn Farm, Mapleline Farm, Four Fat Fowl, and Hudson Valley Fresh.
The Rest
The Discovery Center at Dutch Hollow Farm was established to educate consumers about the dairy industry. The farm's location in the historic town of Stuyvesant is notable for its connection to early Dutch settlers and Henry Hudson's exploration. The Chittenden family has received numerous accolades for their contributions to the dairy industry, including the AJCA Distinguished Service Award and National Jersey Youth Achievement awards.
