About the Farm

Background

David Drazen, who specialized in wholesale fruit and produce, purchased the orchard in 1951 and moved with his wife Ida from New Haven to Cheshire. Initially surrounded by farms and forests, the orchard was known for its New England apple varieties such as Macintosh, Macoun, Baldwin, Rome, and Northern Spy. The trees were large and tall, requiring skilled pickers and tall ladders for harvesting.

Practices

Out of care and concern for the neighbors living in homes now surrounding the orchard, son Gordon became an early adopter of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This approach helps to grow fruit using the most natural means possible.

The Rest

The orchard offers a variety of fruits including apples, peaches, blueberries, pears, and plums. They also provide a farm market with products like apple cider donuts, honey, jams, maple syrup, and more. Visitors can enjoy a 'Pick Your Own' experience with a variety of apples, and there are special offers for second quality apples perfect for cooking or eating.
