About the Farm
Background
In 1964, Toby started his Hereford herd as a young teenager with one cow and her yearling heifer for 4H and FFA projects, using funds he had earned working on his family’s farm. By 1977, when he married Debby, he had about 35 head of registered Herefords. Total-herd performance records began with her help in 1978. In 1989, adaptive management-intensive grazing started small, with one twelve-acre field divided into ten paddocks using electric fencing, and has expanded yearly. In 2003, they began direct marketing all-natural grass-finished beef.
Practices
The farm employs adaptive management-intensive grazing, where beef steers graze fresh pastures sub-divided daily with portable electric fencing whenever the weather allows. During cold winter days, they are often supplemented with home-grown ryegrass, rye, wheat, mixed pasture grasses, and clover hay. The goal is to improve and maintain soil health on about 300 acres of grazing land and to produce high-quality, flavorful beef on pasture year-round without any grain, using managed adaptive grazing techniques.
The Rest
Since 2003, the farm has been offering custom all-grass-finished beeves to the local public. Whole, halves, or quarters of beef may be reserved by deposit, with value incentives for whole beeves. USDA inspected whole cow ground beef is sold in package lots of twenty pounds or more. Brochures and farm tours are available, and delivery to the Paducah, KY area is available by request.
