About the Farm
Background
Devon Point Farm, located in North Stonington, Connecticut, is renowned for raising registered American Milking Devon Cattle. This breed, originally from Devon, England, was the first cattle breed brought to the United States. Known for their tri-purpose use—meat, milk, and oxen—these cattle played a crucial role in early American agriculture, helping to clear forests, build roads, and provide food for settlers. Over time, as farming practices shifted towards high-production, mono-culture farming, the breed became rare and endangered. Devon Point Farm is dedicated to preserving and promoting this historical breed, hosting one of the largest herds in the country.
Practices
Devon Point Farm employs rotational grazing and sustainable farming practices to raise their pastured beef cattle. The cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished, with no grain, antibiotics, or hormones involved. During the winter months, they are fed round-baled hay. The farm also raises heritage pork, allowing pigs to roam freely and supplementing their diet with vegetable scraps and non-medicated, unprocessed whole grains. Both beef and pork are humanely slaughtered and butchered under USDA supervision, ensuring high standards of quality and care.
The Rest
Devon Point Farm offers a variety of products including individual cuts of beef, sampler boxes, quarter and half beef, as well as half or whole pigs. The beef is dry-aged for ten days to two weeks to enhance flavor. The farm also sells American Milking Devon cattle as breed stock, including calves, cows, bulls for herd sires, and semen. The American Milking Devon is a medium-sized, triple-purpose breed known for its hardiness, intelligence, and quality of milk and meat. The cattle are characterized by their red color, compactness, and distinctive horns. Visitors are encouraged to learn more about the breed and even visit the farm to see the cattle firsthand.
