About the Farm

Background

Dark Wood Farm began its journey in 2014 on leased land in Boone County, KY, and has since expanded to Campbell County in 2020. After seven years of leasing land in three different locations, the farm moved to a permanent location in Bracken County, KY, in 2021. This move marked a significant milestone as the farm put down roots for future generations. Known for its flavorful and fresh produce, the farm has become a staple in the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati area.

Practices

All produce is grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, adhering to natural and organic growing principles. The farm improves soil health by adding compost, mineral amendments, and growing cover crops. Pest management includes using fabric row cover, planting beneficial crops to attract insect predators, and maintaining a diverse crop selection. Weeds are managed through hoeing and mowing. The farm's commitment to soil fertility involves compost, cover crops, and careful tillage management to support soil life.

The Rest

Dark Wood Farm emphasizes the importance of local, seasonal, and healthy food. The farm's produce is picked ripe and fresh, ensuring it is packed with minerals and vitamins. The farm crew, consisting of Annie, family, friends, and a small team, hand-seeds, plants, weeds, and harvests everything. The farm also hosts public events and encourages visitors to learn more about their growing practices.
