About the Farm
Background
Cross Island Farms was started in 2005 by Dani Baker and David Belding after purchasing the 102-acre farmstead from the estate of Claude Harden. They were inspired to make the land productive again while being good stewards of the land and water resources. Their journey began with protecting the Class II wetlands on the property and developing a Forest Stewardship Management Plan. The arrival of a hive of honeybees marked their first foray into livestock, which led to the farm's continued growth.
Practices
The farm employs organic farming practices, raising livestock organically on pasture without hormones or antibiotics. They are committed to using renewable energy to reduce their carbon footprint. The Enchanted Edible Forest is a testament to their permaculture philosophy, creating a thriving edible garden ecosystem that works with nature.
The Rest
Year-round, the farm offers organic farm tours, rustic camping, volunteer and internship opportunities, and U-pick berries in the Enchanted Edible Forest. The self-serve farm-stand is open year-round, providing eggs, vegetables, and fruits in season. The farm is conveniently located just over the Thousand Islands Bridge off I-81 exit 51.
