About the Farm
Background
Named for the wild cranberry bog on its property, Cranberry Hill Farm was recognized as a 'Heritage Farm' by the New England Heritage Breeds Conservancy in 2005 for its dedication to raising heritage breeds of livestock and heirloom varieties of plants. In 2007, the farm played a pivotal role in founding the Ashford Farmers Market and served as Market Masters for four years.
Practices
The farm encompasses a variety of habitats, including hayfields, forests, riparian zones, and early successional areas, all managed with a commitment to sustainable farming. The wild cranberries are left unharvested to provide food for migrating ducks. The farm also maintains a market garden of approximately one acre, dedicated to heirloom flowers and vegetables, and raises rare Dominique and Buff Orpington hens for eggs.
The Rest
Each June, hay is harvested from the fields. The farm's diverse habitats support a rich ecosystem, and its market garden produces a variety of heirloom vegetables and flowers.
