Cowsmo Compost

Owned by Nettie Rosenow and her husband, the farm has specialized in producing high-quality composted cow manure using innovative methods involving recycled water and approved composting surfaces.

The farm follows a meticulous composting process that includes flushing manure with recycled water, separating liquids from solids, and composting the solids on a blacktop surface approved by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Temperature monitoring and appropriate turning with a self-propelled turner ensure the compost is properly processed and tested for completion.

In addition to compost, the farm offers four types of organic potting soil tailored for different gardening needs: Red (general purpose with 12% sand), Blue (transplanting mix with 17% sand), Green (no sand, ideal for starting plants), and Green Plus (enhanced with more fertilizer and perlite). An on-farm experiment by Practical Farmers of Iowa found their potting soil, Cowsmo, to perform better than other soils.
