About the Farm
Background
Chris and Amy Coulter have been growing together for over 20 years, having met as science educators during college. They started selling their produce in 2003 and have since expanded their farm operations. Chris diversified the family beef cattle farm to include vegetables, fruit, and flowers in the early 2000s. The farm's name is inspired by the Pearl Buck novel 'The Good Earth.'
Practices
The farm employs permaculture principles to build healthy soils and a robust agroecosystem. Chris, holding degrees in Wildlife Management and Plant and Soil Science, has extensive experience in sustainable agriculture, including research on biochar. The farm integrates livestock, orchards, pasture, and natural areas with their vegetable crops to create a diversified and resilient farming system.
The Rest
The farm hosts a Spring Plant Sale and Open Farm event, offering a variety of vegetable, flower, herb, and perennial plants. They participate in local farmer's markets and offer a CSA program with pickup locations in Jefferson and Nelson Counties. Chris is also an author and Permaculture Design Consultant, having written 'The Complete Guide to Survival Gardening.'
