About the Farm
Background
Located between Shade Mountain and Tuscarora Mountain in Juniata County, this family-run farm has been grazing and producing grass-fed meat since 2001 and grass-fed dairy since 2012. The farm spans 220 acres, with 85 acres of perennial pastures and additional woodland. The farm's commitment to organic practices has been steadfast since 2007, and it has grown to include multiple family members in its operations.
Practices
The farm employs a purely organic farming system, relying exclusively on biological systems to enhance soil, pastures, and animal health. Rotational grazing, cover crops, composting of manure, no-tillage seeding, and conservative crop rotations are extensively used. The farm has eliminated all chemical, synthetic, and antibiotic inputs, striving to reduce fossil fuel use while maximizing solar energy. Ruminant animals are fed only mother's milk, lush pasture, and fermented hay, never tasting any form of grain. Humane processing is handled in a local, USDA-certified abattoir, with meat aged for two to three weeks to ensure maximum taste and tenderness.
The Rest
The farm offers a walk-in freezer to maintain some inventory of meat, though most animals are pre-ordered. Visitors are welcome to select their animal on the hoof. The farm also produces a variety of dairy products, including raw and pasteurized milk cheeses, yogurt, kefir, butter, ice cream, and yogurt smoothies. The family actively participates in farmers markets in Washington DC, and visitors are encouraged to bring their children and boots for a farm tour.
