About the Farm
Background
Located on a 17-acre section of the 67-acre Leichtag Commons, Coastal Roots Farm was established to practice organic farming, share harvests with those lacking access, deliver farm-based education, and foster inclusive spaces for celebrating Jewish life and building a sustainable future. The farm honors the indigenous Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples and acknowledges the historical exploitation within agriculture, committing to partnerships that support local indigenous communities.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative agriculture techniques focused on soil health, including crop rotation and integrating chickens to produce nutrient-dense food. They prioritize building soil organic matter to sequester carbon, creating compost to prevent methane emissions, and avoiding chemicals harmful to people and the planet. These methods support biodiversity, resilience to pests and disease, and soil moisture retention.
The Rest
Coastal Roots Farm is part of the Encinitas Environmental Education (E3) Collaborative, a network of seven nonprofit organizations promoting multi-generational education and community building. They operate a pay-what-you-can Farm Stand, offering fresh, organic produce to ensure fair and dignified access to food for all community members. The farm produces over 80,000 pounds of food annually, donating more than 70% to San Diegans facing food insecurity.
