About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1978 by Tom and Cheryl Thornton, the farm began as an apple orchard and garlic farm, eventually expanding into vegetable crops and nursery production. In 2011, it transitioned into a nonprofit community farm center, and in 2019, it merged with Sustainable Connections to further its educational and technical assistance programs.
Practices
The farm operates on 20 acres at the foot of Sumas Mountain, focusing on organic fruit production and field trials in partnership with various agricultural institutions. It emphasizes hands-on learning experiences and cooperative accessibility to develop and expand markets for locally grown fruits. The farm's philosophy centers on the belief that farmers are leaders in community and climate resilience, and it aims to create productive landscapes from the micro to the ecosystem scale.
The Rest
The farm offers paid internships, free workshops for farmers and home gardeners, and operates a seasonal produce stand. It also conducts field trials in collaboration with the Washington State Department of Agriculture, Washington State University Extension, Community Food Co-op, and Whatcom Community Foundation. The nursery supports local food systems by selling fruit and ornamental plants, with proceeds funding educational programs.
