About the Farm
Background
Castle Hill Farm, settled in 1803 in the Middletown Valley, is managed by the fourth owners from the original land grant. Known for its Suffolk sheep, the farm has a rich history of producing high-quality lamb and sheep products. The farm is a working operation with a rotational grazing system, a soil conservation plan, and a variety of livestock including sheep, lambs, and barn owls.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative agriculture practices, including soil testing and the use of soil fungi and bacteria to enhance soil health. Manure from a neighboring dairy farm and aged sheep compost are used as organic fertilizers. The farm raises both grass-fed and grain-fed lambs without growth hormones or steroids, ensuring high-quality meat. Hay is produced on-site, with a focus on maintaining weed-free, dense bales. A rotational grazing system and a soil conservation plan are integral to their farming philosophy.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of products including custom-processed lamb cuts, hay, straw, aged sheep compost, and honey from bee hives. They also provide Suffolk breeding stock and 4-H project lambs. Visitors are welcomed, and the farm is managed with the help of two rescue border collies. The farm also serves as a dealer for Sydell Sheep & Goat Livestock Equipment and offers ewe breeding services and ram leasing to experienced shepherds.
