About the Farm
Background
The Button Farm Living History Center, located on 40 acres within Seneca Creek State Park in Germantown, Maryland, is Maryland’s only living history center depicting 19th-century plantation life. It is home to the Menare Foundation and provides a safe and affirming space for people to gather, commune, and explore. The farm is known for its interactive experiences that reveal the nation’s social justice legacy through the story of slavery and the Underground Railroad.
Practices
Although not certified organic, the farm does not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The proceeds from the CSA program help fund the operation of the farm, including the restoration of a 1900 house and a Civil War era barn.
The Rest
The farm offers a variety of programs and tours, including opportunities to learn about the Underground Railroad, slavery, and rural life in the mid-nineteenth century. It also hosts events like the Coming To the Table Annual Potluck and provides spaces such as the Commons, Museum Garden, Animal Pens, Historic Outbuildings, and Slave Cemetery for visitors to explore.
