About the Farm

Background

The Buppert family has been farming in Marriottsville, Maryland since 1951 when the land was purchased by Doran and Helen Buppert. Initially a traditional farm with livestock, hay, grain, and produce, it evolved to meet the growing demand for local, fresh produce. Starting from a simple market table on the lawn, the farm has expanded to offer a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, becoming well-known in Carroll County for its high-quality produce and healthy plants.

Practices

Farming methods focus on natural and sustainable agriculture. Cover crops are planted to naturally fix nitrogen into the soil, and soil is regularly tested and limed to maintain a healthy pH. Crop rotation is practiced to maintain soil nutrient levels and break pest life cycles. Biodegradable and natural pest management applications are used, many of which fall under organic certification. The farm follows the MDA Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to minimize spray applications. To reduce erosion, crop rows are mulched, and buffer zones of trees, shrubbery, and other vegetation line the waterways. Water consumption is minimized with low flow watering heads in greenhouses and drip irrigation on selected crops only when necessary.

The Rest

The farm features a market open from April to November, a 25-week CSA, educational tours, and festive fall activities such as hay rides to the pumpkin patch and a small corn maze. Spring brings a variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, native, and pollinator-friendly plants, while summer and fall offer a bounty of seasonal produce. The farm also supports bees and pollinators, emphasizing the creation of a strong dynamic soil ecosystem. Payment methods accepted include FMNP, SNAP, Mastercard, and Visa.
