About the Farm
Background
Bonnie Brae Farms has been in the family for three generations, with the current focus on deer farming beginning in 1994. The farm started as a quest to revitalize over 200 acres of old farmland. Henry and Bruce Ahern explored various farming options before settling on deer farming after attending a seminar at the New Hampshire Farm and Forest Expo. They visited several deer farms in the region, conducted extensive research, and ultimately decided on Red Deer. The first twenty-seven deer arrived in February 1994, marking the official start of the farm's operations.
Practices
The farm raises around 300 deer, which are primarily grass and hay-fed, with a grain supplement. The feed is free from steroids, antibiotics, and hormones. The farm is dedicated to improving its bloodlines, incorporating Scottish, German, and Yugoslavian genetics. Bonnie Brae Farms is registered with NADeFA as Red Deer Herd #107. The farm also offers consulting services to guide new deer farmers through the process, from business planning to property preparation and animal care.
The Rest
Bonnie Brae Farms offers high-quality venison, which is low in fat and cholesterol, and high in protein. The velvet antler product, rich in chondroitin, glucosamine, minerals, and amino acids, is beneficial for both people and pets. Products are available at the farm, the Concord Farmers Market, and for shipping. The farm hosts an annual Open Farm Day on the third Sunday in August, featuring guided tours and venison samples prepared by a guest chef. Additionally, the farm provides seminars on deer farming and offers training in fencing, animal handling, and marketing.
