About the Farm
Background
Blue Moon Pastures is a collaboration between two farms, one located in Silver Lake on land owned by Jason's grandparents, and the other about 10 miles north of Hutchinson where Sue grew up. The farm in Silver Lake focuses on raising pasture-fed chickens and Heritage Turkeys, while the farm near Hutchinson, managed by Dennis and Sue Puschmann, specializes in vegetables, raspberries, and chickens, and also takes orders for Heritage Pork.
Practices
Chickens are raised on local organic feed and moved into pasture pens at about 2 weeks of age, with daily relocations to ensure access to fresh grass and bugs. This method promotes a natural diet and healthy living conditions. The farm emphasizes rotational grazing to maintain soil health and provide the animals with a diverse diet.
The Rest
The first batch of chickens is scheduled for butchering in early June 2012. Heritage Turkeys are also available, though supplies are limited. Orders for Heritage Pork are being taken for processing in late fall. The farm's Facebook page serves as a temporary website for updates and farm activities.
