About the Farm
Background
Thirty-three years ago, the great experiment began with the planting of 50 apple trees in a brushy meadow high above the rocky banks of Big Horse Creek. Over the decades, the orchard has grown to include hundreds of trees and has become known for custom-grafting antique and heirloom apple trees. These trees have been planted in every state in the country except Hawaii. Despite the challenges of age and health issues, the farm has maintained its dedication to preserving heritage apple varieties.
Practices
The orchard focuses on the preservation of heirloom apple varieties, custom-grafting high-quality trees, and selling scionwood to individuals interested in grafting their own trees. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to research and travel to collect apples, scionwood, and the stories associated with these heritage varieties. The farm ensures the finest standard in grafting wood and maintains a reputation for excellent product quality and customer satisfaction.
The Rest
All trees available for purchase must be picked up in person, either at the farm or at the Ashe County Farmers’ Market. The farm's website serves as an educational tool for future reference and research. The owners have expressed heartfelt gratitude to their customers for their support and interest over the last 30 years.
