About the Farm
Background
Big River Farms has established itself as a cornerstone of the St. Croix River Valley, providing organic vegetables directly from farm to table. Known for its commitment to community-supported agriculture, the farm has become a hub for both seasoned and emerging farmers.
Practices
The farm emphasizes clean and safe farming practices, rigorously testing compost and water supply annually to ensure the absence of harmful bacteria. By integrating a diverse variety of crops, including ethnic specialties, the farm aligns its production with the natural rhythms of the growing season. This approach not only nourishes the soil but also fosters a deeper connection between the land and the community.
The Rest
Big River Farms serves as a training ground for 3-4 interns and 10-15 socially disadvantaged farmers, who cultivate their own plots while learning sustainable farming techniques. CSA members receive a weekly box of vegetables in exchange for pre-season support, with flexible payment plans available. The farm encourages members to visit and engage with the farming process, and the farm manager is always on hand to answer questions.
