About the Farm
Background
Big Bear Ranch, a family-operated farm, is located in the foothills of the Cariboo Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. Since March 2016, the 1100-acre ranch has been Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) and Certified Grassfed by AWA. Previously, it was certified organic by PACS from 2004 until 2014. The farm is known for its commitment to high welfare standards and sustainable practices.
Practices
Big Bear Ranch emphasizes a holistic approach to farming, ensuring a balance between the land, animals, and people. The farm starts with naturally fertile soil to grow a variety of healthy plants, which the animals graze on, resulting in nutritious and flavorful meat. They employ a rotational grazing system for their grass-finished beef and do not feed grain to ruminants. Humane animal husbandry is a cornerstone of their practices, including low-stress handling techniques and allowing animals to graze on large pastures. Cows calve on green grass, pigs grow up in expansive pastures with trees and wallows, and chickens and turkeys are truly free-range.
The Rest
Big Bear Ranch offers grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork in various quantities, including whole, halves, quarters, and individual cuts. They also provide ground beef, European-style Bratwurst, and pet food. Broadbreasted Bronze Turkeys are available in the fall and must be preordered. The farm encourages visitors to explore the ranch or visit their website for more information. Monthly deliveries are made to the Lower Mainland, Okanagan, and Prince George.
