About the Farm

Background

The Bezaleel Israel Eco-Village, affectionately known as BZ Farm, has been developed over 30 years by its landowner, BZ, who joined the Love Family commune more than 50 years ago. BZ is a regular at Rainbow Gatherings, Barter Fairs, and Healing Gatherings, and has dedicated his life to creating a self-sufficient permaculture community. The land is in the process of becoming a community land trust to be preserved as a peopled conservancy for future generations.

Practices

The farm employs regenerative agriculture and permaculture methods, focusing on chemical-free soil-building and water conservation. The property is divided into four main sections, including arable land on the valley floor and benches, a market garden, an orchard, and mixed species woodlots. Farming practices include sustainable woodlot management, tree felling, green building, off-grid energy production, and earth restoration. The farm also raises livestock, including Ancona ducks and Nubian goats, and operates a seed business.

The Rest

The farm offers a CSA program with 15 weeks of produce, available for pickup at farmers' market stands. Apprenticeships are available, providing opportunities to learn homesteading skills and participate in the farm collective. The eco-village is linked with regional networks such as the Inland Northwest Permaculture Guild and the Friends of the Trees Society. Visitors can volunteer, and there are opportunities for long-term residency and income generation through the farm collective.
