About the Farm

Background

The farming heritage began in 1917 when Stephen and Walter Bedner bought farmland in Upper St. Clair. Stephen and his wife, Elizabeth, farmed with their four children, and the family transported produce to the market by horse-drawn wagon. In 1956, Robert and Russell Bedner opened Bedner’s Farm Market on Bower Hill Road. Over 30 years ago, Bob and Sue Bedner started growing flowers in a small greenhouse to sell at the family’s farm market. Today, the business has expanded to include fifteen production greenhouses and fields for produce, making it one of the largest selections of annuals in Western Pennsylvania.

Practices

Plant production begins every January in the greenhouses, which are filled with hanging baskets, potted annuals, herb and vegetable plants, and perennials. The farm grows a variety of produce, including sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkins, and gourds. The farm emphasizes the joy of growing and creating beautiful outdoor spaces, making fresh, healthy produce available to the community.

The Rest

The farm offers a garden center open from March through October, filled with homegrown trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, gardening supplies, soils, mulch, fall mums, and pumpkins. They provide expert landscape services, seasonal workshops, a winery, farm-to-table dinners, group events, pavilion rentals, and fields for pick-your-own vegetables and flower bouquets. The business is guided by values of quality, integrity, teamwork, dedication, education, and relationships, with a mission to connect people to the benefits of nature through homegrown plants, products, and services.
