About the Farm

Background

AZ Farm began in March 2015, managed by sisters Alexis and Ariel Zimmerlein, who are 5th generation farmers. Alexis pursued a degree in Naturopathic Medicine full-time in 2017, leaving Ariel to manage the farm. Ariel holds a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics with a minor in Plant and Soil Science from SIUC and has been involved in sustainable agriculture for over 5.5 years, starting with SIUC's Sustainable Vegetable Farm.

Practices

The farm employs crop rotations, cover crops, and companion planting to enhance soil fertility, attract beneficial insects, and reduce disease. They avoid the use of chemicals entirely, relying on natural methods to maintain their crops.

The Rest

AZ Farm operates on a quarter of an acre of their grandfather's land in La Moille, IL, and another quarter-acre in Marseilles. They participate in a CSA in La Salle and attend the Ottawa Town Market, focusing on nutrition education. Ariel also offers nutrition consulting to promote healthy lifestyles through whole, plant-based foods.
